Block Stacking, Sorting and Merging Game Tips

Block games are some of the most popular casual puzzles, and they come in many forms: rows to complete, pieces to fit, columns to sort and objects to merge. What they share is that space is limited and every decision changes what is possible later. These habits help in all of them.

Keep as much open space as you can

In row-clearing games such as Stack Up and Sleeping Animal, every block you place takes room. The board fills up when you place blocks in a way that does not complete rows. Prefer moves that clear space or keep the surface flat and even. A clean board gives you more options for the next block, and more options mean fewer emergencies.

Avoid holes

A hole is an empty cell that is covered or surrounded so that nothing can fill it. Holes stop rows from completing, and they tend to multiply. Before you place a piece, check the gaps it will leave underneath and beside it. It is often better to choose a slightly less exciting position that does not create a hole.

Learn to rotate and shift with a plan

In Stack Up, the shapes rise from the bottom, and you can rotate and shift them as they climb. Decide where the shape should end up as soon as it appears, rather than moving it randomly and hoping. When you know the final position, the rotation is quick.

Sorting games: keep one place free

In Cake Tower, you move cakes between columns to group identical ones together. If you have a free column or a spare slot, it works like a temporary shelf: you can put a cake there while you rearrange the others. Locked slots have to be opened before you can use them, so try to unlock them early, when it is easy, and not when you have run out of room.

Give each slot one type

Whenever you can, put only one kind of item in each column or slot. Mixed groups need to be untangled later, which costs moves. The same idea helps in Animal Pals Pair and similar sorting puzzles.

Counting puzzles: count first, move second

In Cat Drop, each numbered block absorbs an exact number of cats of a matching color. Before you move a block, count the cats of each color. Knowing what the board contains lets you decide which block should collect which group, and it prevents the frustrating situation where one block takes cats that another block needed.

Merging games: plan the chain

In Sport Merge, two identical balls combine into a bigger one. The most successful players think about what will merge next, and they place balls where a merge chain is possible. Keep balls of similar sizes close to each other, and avoid dropping a ball where it blocks the space you need. Remember that the grid fills up when you drop carelessly.

Fitting puzzles: biggest pieces first

In Block Animal Puzzle and Cats Block, you drag pieces onto a board until they fit together and fill the grid. Start with the largest or most awkward shapes and place them where only they can go. Then use the smaller pieces to fill in the rest. Where the game has a timer or a limited number of steps, as in Block Animal Puzzle, take a moment to plan before your first drag.

Think about what each move unlocks

A good move is not only one that works now, but one that makes the next move easier. Before you commit, ask yourself what space you are opening, and what space you are closing. Over a whole level, that habit is worth more than any single trick.
